Major Public Transit Change: AC Transit No. 13

March 18, 2010
admin

Effective Sunday, March 28th, the “No. 13” AC Transit line that has served our neighborhood for decades will be discontinued and replaced by the “BA line” which will be rerouted and now stop (terminate) at Wala Vista but only during weekday commute hours.  While this might work for any weekday commuter whose final destination is San Francisco, it will come as a surprise to anyone else who occasionally uses the bus during the day to travel to downtown Oakland or BART.  For Bus to BART during mid-day, you should plan on taking either the “NL” line at Lakeshore and Lake Park (runs at 15 minute intervals) or the Grand Avenue bus, the “No. 12”, across from the Grand Lake Theater (runs at 30 minute intervals).

Where was the Robert S. McNamara Residence? Mystery Solved?

admin

It’s well known that Robert S. McNamara grew up right here in Lakewood Park but many have been uncertain about his exact address. McNamara was the nation’s eighth Secretary of Defense under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and the person most often associated with the nation’s military strategies and decisions during the Viet Nam War. He was the son of Robert James McNamara and Clara Nell (Strange) McNamara (hence his Strange middle name). He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1933 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley in 1937. According to the city directories of the day, Robert J. and Clara Nell lived at 1036 Annerley Road, the current residence of Clinton and May Arndt who have lived there for the past 30 years. May told me that they purchased the home from a family that was unable to get their children into Piedmont School because the address is actually in Oakland. So how was it possible that Robert S. was able to attend Piedmont Schools? No one seems to known for sure. It could be that the school eligibility requirements at the time were more lenient or perhaps Clara Nell was employed by the City of Piedmont. His father, Robert J. was a sales manager at a wholesale shoe company in San Francisco.

Neighborhood incidents

January 16, 2010
admin
FYI…Just want to alert everyone to the following incidents. Please keep your eyes and ears open and report anything suspicious to the police right away. (I’m sending this to the neighborhood-wide email list and apologize for duplicating this message. Please share with others in the area who are not on the list.)
Last night, Friday 1/15/10, a female teenager was running down Portsmouth (towards Harvard) screaming and believing she was being chased at about midnight tonight. A black male in a black jogging suit was seen running away on Harvard (towards Prospect) and may have gotten into a car and drove away (towards Lakeshore). A neighbor let the girl into their house for safety. I called 911 as soon as I saw the man running away. Three police cars came within minutes and searched the area with K-9′s, including people’s backyards. The woman was not hurt but is very shaken up.
Last week on Friday 1/8/10 around 2:30 at George Lee’s house (near the corner of Portsmouth & Harvard): Three people came to George Lee’s house claiming to be census workers. They asked, “Is this George and Sylvia Lee’s house?” and other questions, such as what is their annual income. Sylvia’s medical aide let them in but, once they entered, they dispersed throughout the house making the aide suspicious. She asked for ID but they didn’t show her any. She told them they should leave. The man left quickly but the two women seemed reluctant to leave. The aide picked up her cell phone and threatened to call for help.
Then the two women left. They crossed the street and headed down Harvard (in the direction of Lakeshore…possibly having parked a car down the street?) The aide said they were speaking in another language and the two women also had their heads covered or wrapped. George reported the incident to the police when he returned home and heard about the incident. Fortunately, the neighbor across the street had seen the suspicious-looking threesome and taken down their license plate number. The police investigated it as an “unlawful entry” incident and were able to pick up a couple of youths and take them into custody.
